Al lettore chiedo un po’ di pazienza perche’ anche in questo numero de Lo Specchio devo scrivere delle vicende del sindaco Linda Jackson, mentre avevo deciso di scriverne a maggio, dopo che il city manager Michael De Angelis avra’ presentato al Consiglio la docu-mentazione sulle spese del sindaco pagate con la American Express Card della Citta’, dopo che i revisori nominati dal Consiglio avranno presentato la perizia amministrativa sul bilancio di entrate e spese elettorali del sindaco Jackson e dopo...
Riassumendo: in una e-mail il sindaco Linda Jackson afferma di non essersi mai opposta alla richiesta di una revisione dei suoi conti elettorali; che ci sono persone che fanno affermazioni senza alcun fondamento per portare avanti le loro agende personali e che, negli ultimi mesi dagli uffici del comune di Vaughan c’e’ stata una fuga di informazioni che hanno lo scopo di minare la sua po-sizione.
La richiesta sulle spese ed entrate elettorali e’ stata presentata da residenti della Citta’ che chiedono una verifica che accerti non vi siano state irregolarita’ in una campagna elettorale alla fine della quale e’ stato eletto il sindaco della citta’.Di secondaria importanza che si tratti di “oppositori”.
Una richiesta di verifica sulla quale si e’ dichiarata d’accordo anche il giudice Lucia Favret che ha “ordinato” la nomina di un revisore dei conti.
Nel caso delle spese con la carta di credito, si tratta di soldi pubblici dei quali si deve rendere conto al contribuente e, anche in questo caso e’ stato lo stesso Consiglio a chiedere una documentazione su quelle spese. Non importa chi ha presentato la richiesta, ma stabilire che le spese siano quelle ammesse dal regolamento.

Pur capendo che sia fastidioso esser sotto la lente insistentemente, meraviglia l’atteggiamento indignato del nostro primo cittadino.
Per tutta la sua campagna elettorale il sindaco Linda Jackson ha “battuto” sulla necessita’ di chiarezza nell’ammini-strazione della res publica e percio’ dovrebbe essere contenta dell’oppor-tunita’ di dimostrare la sua integrita’ di funzionario pubblico.
Il che metterebbe a tacere coloro che lei definisce i suoi oppositori e, pronostico, le assicurerebbe la rielezione nel 2010:non resta che aspettare.

Ps - Nella sua e-mail il sindaco Linda Jackson scrive che “recentemente sono stata criticata in un giornale locale:un giornale che sembra avere la stessa agenda mirante a screditare sia me che l’integrita’ di questo Ufficio”.
Visto che a Vaughan i giornali locali ab-bondano, dal sindaco ci saremmo aspettati di sapere a quale giornale si riferisce e non un’affermazione generica che lascia il tempo che trova. Una questione di chia-rezza!

I ask our readers' indul-gence for writing, again, in this edition of Lo Specchio about the issues involving Mayor Linda Jackson. I had originally decided to wait till May, after city manager Michael De Angelis had tabled with Council all the documentation relative to the mayor's expenses paid with the City's American Express card and after the filing of the audit of Mayor Jackson's election campaign expenses and donations financial statement, by the accounting team appointed by City Council and after…..
To recapitulate: Mayor Jackson has issued a statement
saying that she's never opposed an audit of her election campaign finances; that there are individual who are making unfounded statements in order to further their own personal agendas and that, during the past several months information has been leaked from the City of Vaughan in order to undermine her.
The audit request for the election expenses and donations has been filed by residents of the City of Vaughan who seek the assurance that no irregularities have taken place in a campaign for the election of the City's Mayor. That these residents may also be "opponents" is really secondary.
Judge Lucia Favret, who has ordered that an auditor be appointed, agreed with the validity of the audit request.
In regards to the expenses paid with the City's credit card, we are dealing with public monies and its use must be justified to the taxpayers of Vaughan. And again, it is City Council that has asked for the documented break-down of these expenses.
It really doesn't matter who made the request, what matters is determining that all expenses have been made within the established rules.
While it is understandable that it can be irritating to be constantly under the microscope, the indignation expressed by our Mayor is quite surprising.
For the duration of her campaign, Mayor Jackson constantly hit upon the need for openness and integrity in the administration of the public Good; we would think she would welcome the opportunity to prove her integrity as an elected official.
It would be the best way to silence all those she calls her opponents and, I would safely guess, assure her re-election in 2010: we can only wait and see.

p.s. In her statement, Mayor Linda Jackson writes that "recently, I have been attacked in a local newspaper; a newspaper which seems to have the same agenda to discredit me as well as to discredit the integrity of this office". Since Vaughan has more than its share of local newspapers, we would have expected from the Mayor to be told which paper she was referring to and not some pointless generic statement: it's a question of openness and integrity!
