PASSPORT, PLEASE!
If, after June 1st, you're off to the States...
Don't be one who procrastinates.
If you don't have a passport..or its not all in order...
You and family might not cross the border!!
OK, so my rhyming couplets are a bit lame. But you get the idea.
If you and your family are planning to visit the United States this
summer - whether by road, rail, water or air - you'll be subject to
a tough, new law called the U.S. Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
The new law requires all travellers, including American and Canadian
citizens, to present a valid passport or other, approved, secure documents
when entering the United States.
As of June 1st, anyone 16 years of age or older, will be required to
present a passport to cross the border into the U.S.
There are a couple of acceptable alternatives: a NEXUS or FAST (Free
and Secure) card or an enhanced drivers license. (which means it has
to be programmed with a chip)
Canadians 15 years of age or younger will only require proof of citizenship,
such as a birth certificate or
a Canadian citizenship card.
But, many folks are wisely getting passports for everyone in the family.
A passport is the only universally accepted identification document
and it proves one has the right to return to Canada.
It simply makes sense to have all family members in the same category
and with similiar expiration dates.
I've received so many inquiries about the new requirements that, on
the first Sunday in May, I held the GTA's first public passport clinic
at the Promenade Mall. My constituency office staff and volunteers processed
almost 200 applications during the five hour clinic and received another
15 or 20 in the following week.
We also worked with the Blacks Promenade photo shop provide Thornhill
residents a volume discounted price for the day.
But, its not enough to simply have a passport. Many countries require
passports to have from 3 to six months of validity before the expiration
date.
As a matter of fact, one fellow arrived at our clinic with an urgent
request for assistance. He was only days away from leaving for a family
wedding in a country which required 6 months validity. His son had noticed
that his passport was much closer to expiry.
We were delighted to help him acquire an emergency document to get to
the happy event.
But, better to check your family's documents today and, where necessary,
get the passport process moving.
The application forms have been simplified and the process has been
streamlined.
